Why NOW is the BEST time to start Training!

Every year it’s the same thing.

“Oh, I’m going to wait until after the holidays to start training.”

And every year, I sit down just shaking my head.  What I’m thinking is, “So what you’re saying is you want to A – Gain another 5- 10 pounds of fat and B – Do it willingly before you start working out?  That’s what you’re saying?”  I usually don’t say that, but that’s what I’m thinking.

The average weight gain over the holiday season is about 4-7 pounds.  During that time, the sun is also out for a shorter period of time and as it becomes colder, many people tend to “hibernate.”

This doesn’t exactly set up the most motivating environment to start an exercise routine.

I think my least favorite aspect of that nonsense that just spewed out of the person’s mouth isn’t necessarily the logistics of the excuse, but the reasoning behind it.  If the holidays were truly a time where you wanted to spend more quality time with your family and maintained your health, I wouldn’t mind that your visits to the gym were less.

What bothers me is that this line of thinking is just the lazy-man’s excuse for not having a backbone.

What I mean is this:  By far, the biggest excuse why people won’t stick to a smart “eating plan” isn’t that they dislike the foods or that they don’t feel satieted from the foods, but that they can’t say “No.”

To who?  To themselves?  No, they can say no to themselves.  What they can’t say “No” to is their friends and family.

They can’t be “different” than the people that they care about.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for going out and hanging out with friends.  I’m all for good times and celebrations.  Trust me, every day is “Happy New Years!”  Cheers!

The question is, why does spending time with people you care about and celebrating have to automatically mean that you have to eat shit foods and drink garbage which makes you feel like shit the next day?

"I'm starting the gym tomorrow. I swear"

Why does “celebrating” automatically have to mean that your priorities in life goes out the door?

To me, it’s like saying, “I just bought this $40,000 car.  I’ve saved for the past year to do it.  Let’s go celebrate!” – by driving it into a wall.

Yeah, good times.

The reason we can’t say “no” is because, we don’t know how to explain our priorities to those people we care about.

You see, people will always question what they don’t understand.  And what perplexes people more than anything else is when you would possibly want to make a change in your life, when it’s so much WORKThat dreaded “W” word.

What people don’t understand, they question.  Beyond questioning though, they doubt.  They doubt themselves.  They start to question their self-image.  “Can I do better?” they ask themselves.

They may not do it consciously, but it’s there.  And when the answer comes, they don’t like it.

You are showing them that they have the power to change their lives and, personally, they don’t like that.  They like the status quo.  Oh, they may bitch and moan about how they “need to lose weight” but the reality is they don’t want to do a damn thing in order to lose that weight…especially around the holidays.

So in order to feel better, they ask questions or make accusations.

“Why are you doing that?”  As though you are an alien from another universe and they are trying to understand the “weirdness” of your universe.

Or better yet, they say something to the effect of, “Why don’t you just live a little?”  As though eating foods that taste good but make you feel like shit is really living it up.

What really boggles my mind the most though is the constant condescending undertone of all of those statements.  It’s not only that what you’re doing is “different and weird” but that you’re also a small asshole for it.  Not a big one.  Just a little one.

And that is EXACTLY why this is the best time of year for you to start working out.

Whether you start now or next year, the bottom line is that you will always have people commenting and asking you asinine questions telling you to “go over to the dark side.”

The quicker you can learn to stick up for who you are and the things you want out of your life, the quicker you realize that it’s not that serious.  You can enjoy holiday dinners and celebrations with the people you care about, without it being a huge ordeal.

The quicker you explain what they don’t understand, (without accusing them of being slackers) the quicker you will be free to stay on the path of your choosing.

You don’t have to be so “different and weird” but just on a different path.  You don’t have to stop hanging out with your friends and you don’t have to be so anal as to think that everyone now needs to live your lifestyle.

It’s your lifestyle.  Keep it as yours.  Let others live their lives the best way they see fit.  If they ask for advice in the future, give them what they asked for.  Just as they should respect your decision to live a healthier lifestyle, you should respect theirs not to.

The bottom line is that when it’s all said and done, there is no “best time” to start working out.  If you aren’t working out now though, then NOW is the best time to get started…even if the holidays are just around the corner.
